There’s been a lot written and said about the evils and spiritual distortions caused by Christian celebrity culture. You don’t have to look far to find critiques of Christians who, for whatever reason, have become household names in the Western Christian subculture and used that celebrity to hurt and harm people. Some “Christian celebrities” are pastors of large churches, others are writers or speakers or musicians, and still others have become their own kind of Christian celebrity for their slaps, dunks, and takedowns of Christian celebrity.
Sadly, wherever there are people there will be celebrities. And that reality is on us.
Frankly, Christian celebrities are easy to scorn and jeer. To be even more blunt, much of the derision seems intellectually disingenuous and perhaps even sanctimonious. Worse still, mocking so-called Christian celebrities has become a new kind of virtue-signaling designed to make the mockers feel righteous, without having to deal with the obvious: We created the celebrities we disdain.
